Things to do in Cardiff, Wales

This beautiful capital city in the heart of Wales has so much to offer, it’s no wonder so many tourists stop by each year. Cardiff was designated as a City of Sport in 2009 and also has a wealth of culture, entertainment and attractions to keep you busy. Cardiff’s transformation over the years from small town, to capital city makes it alive with history.

Visit a Castle

Right in the heart of the city lies Cardiff Castle. It has been home to Roman soldiers, noble knights and the Bute Family. The interior of the castle is stunning, with stained glass, gilding, and murals. The wartime shelters have recently opened to the public, to recreate a time when the castle’s tunnels were used as a place of refuge during WWII air raids. Your trip to the castle includes a free audio guide which takes you around to many of the attractions in the castle. This is definitely worth a stop on your list of things to do in Cardiff, Wales.

Sports and Leisure

Whether you want to watch or play, Cardiff boasts an endless variety of activities and venues to keep you busy. If motion is what you’re after check out the Taff Trail, an 88 kilometre route, mostly off road bicycle trail from Cardiff to the nearby town of Brecon.

If you’re wanting to take it a little easier, how about a game of golf? There is a large number of courses to choose from including the Celtic Manor Resort, host of the 2010 Ryder Cup. Check out Cardiff International White Water if adventure is your game. It’s advertised as an on demand white water facility where you can try out activities like white water rafting, kayaking and hydro speeding. If you’re looking for something a little tamer there is also a flat water area.

Enjoy the Arts

The New Theatre is Cardiff’s oldest surviving theatre. It is located in the city centre and is home to musicals, dance, children’s shows and  pantomime. This is the place to go to see some famous  West End shows and big name performers.

Cardiff is a proud city, that has worked hard to get to where it is today. It is a family friendly destination, with plenty of things to do for all. There are many international sporting, music and cultural events to keep you and your family busy and entertained. Add in world class shopping and restaurants and you won’t run out of things to do in Cardiff, Wales anytime soon.
