Things to do in Alcalá de Henares (Spain)

Alcalá de Henares is a city of Spain located in the center of the country, belonging to the Community of Madrid. Is about 600 meters and has about 250.000 inhabitants. Represents one of the most symbolic places for spanish language, being the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, author of a spanish Classic: Don Quijote de la Mancha.

The city, especially in its historic center, reflects the result of the harmonious combination architectonic of different elements from three very influential cultures in ancient Europe: the Jewish, Christian and Arabic. It is true that not all of these cultures agreed in splendor in the same years, but the remains were so evident in the city and are manifested in its streets and historical buildings, especially religious.

The city also preserves traces of a Roman city Complutum that are suspected to be spread over a large part of the geography of the city. The Complutum deposit is located about 1km from the medieval center of town (Plaza de Los Santos Niños, quite central, where today is located the Cathedral church), and there is another archaeological site with similar characteristics, which is located in mountain areas adjacent to the claim serve, at the time, place from which guarded the city against attack. All these places are open to public visits.
