Today’s interview is with Jennifer and Tim from Jdomb’s Travels.
1. What is your name, where are you from and where have you been in this world?
We’re Jennifer and Tim. Tim is from Chicago and I’m from Erie, Pennsylvania. We’ve lived in Las Vegas and Phoenix, and now we’re living in Italy. We’ve been to 30 countries on 3 continents together.
2. What is your blog address? How long have you been blogging and what is the main focus of it?
Our blog is Jdomb’s Travels and we’ve been blogging for just over 3 years now. Our blog focuses on our travels and offering tips on what to go and see in each of the destinations we visit. We really want to inspire others to get out and see this awesome planet of ours!
3. Besides the basic essentials, what is something you simply could not live without on the road?
Our cameras. Not only do we love sharing our pictures from our travels, we love looking back at them and remembering our special times in those places.
4. How has travel enriched your life?
That’s a loaded question! The biggest impact travel has had in enriching our lives is the impact it has had on our marriage. We were in a rut before we moved to Italy. We’d quickly run out of things to say and going to the movies became our go to activity.
Once we moved to Italy and started traveling, we fell in love all over again. We push each other to do things we might not have considered doing on our own. And these days we’ve always got something to talk about, whether it’s laughing over the time our GPS took us on this crazy dirt mountain road in Jordan or excitedly planning our next adventure.
5. Of all the cities you have ever visited, which 3 left the largest impression on
you and why?
We have to pick just 3?! Well, then it would have to be:
Budapest, Hungary. Don’t get us wrong. We LOVE Europe! But it can start to feel like a lot of the same: old structures, churches, museums. What we love about Budapest is that we’ve found some really interesting off-the-beaten path activities to do there. We’ve even caved beneath Budapest!
Petra, Jordan. All we knew of Petra before we visited was that we’d seen a temple come into view in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and wanted to see it for ourselves. We weren’t prepared for the sheer size of Petra, nor its beauty.
Reykjavik, Iceland. We love fireworks (which is a whole story in and of itself) and the we heard when traveling in Iceland that Icelanders sure do know how to light up the sky with the ultimate fireworks display on New Year’s Eve. We reigned in the New Year by watching the live stream from Reykjavik before heading out for our own celebration. And we plan to reign in 2013 from Reykjavik!
6. If you could be anyone for a day, who would it be?
Tim would be Dave from The Planet D because they’re always doing cool stuff. I would love to be Duchess Kate for a day. I’ve always wanted to know what it’s like to be a princess. And if Duchess Kate could just happen to be in the Seychelles the day I’m her, that would be great!
7. In a perfect world, where do you see yourself and your blog in 5 years?
We’re on more of a 7 year plan. Tim is in the Air Force and our vision for our blog is to travel full time when he retires in 7 years. We’ve recently started travel lunch and learns for the community of the base we’re stationed at in Italy and we’d love to grow that into regular speaking engagements to overseas military communities around the world. We love inspiring our community to take advantage of their overseas assignment and get out to travel more!
8. If you had 1 travel tip to share with the world, what would it be?
Life is too short. Don’t make excuses to wait to travel. If you want to travel, just plan it and go! There is always somewhere that fits your budget and time. The memories of that trip will last you a lifetime.
9. What stands out as your best and worst travel memory?
Our worst travel memory is from the first time we traveled internationally together. We flew to St. Maarten and after turbulently circling for over an hour in a storm, we finally landed to discover our bags were still somewhere in the US. After arriving at our hotel, we got an indoor swimming pool we hadn’t bargained for – our hotel bed was standing in 3 inches of water from the storm. We nearly caught our second room on fire as Tim turned on the tv and sparks shot out. I felt like Goldilocks as I declared our third room was finally just right.
Our best travel memory is of our time in Iceland. Iceland just knocked our socks off. The landscape is beyond beautiful, we had a great mix of outdoor activities like hiking during the day, and then enjoyed strolls around the cosmopolitan city of Reykjavik together in the evening. We can’t wait to return later this year.
10. Please list 3 of your most popular blog posts?
Festa del Redentore, a big festival in Venice where the people still celebrate the end of the plague. It all culminates in a massive 45-minute long firework display.
Postcard Perfect Santorini is about our recent visit to the island that was just as we always pictured Greece to be.
In Agriturismo = Homecooked Deliciousness we wonder why it took us nearly 3 years of living in Italy to eat at our first agriturismo!
