Get Away To These Unheralded Beach Destinations in Malaysia

As winter’s relentless march forward causes the temperature to sink in tandem with your spirits, the urge to plan a holiday to escape the worst parts of this inconvenient season is rising within you. While you do this every year, as you have gotten older, you have become increasingly inpatient with the antics and conduct of rowdy and inconsiderate holidaymakers in popular sun destinations, and the irritating touts that besiege you at every turn trying to sell you stuff you don’t need or want?

Ughhhh!

While there are many tantalizing beach resorts that can be found across Southeast Asia , many of them are crawling with the problems that we just mentioned. However, the nation of Malaysia has largely dodged these problems due to its more conservative culture and high alcohol prices (funny how problems disappear when the firewater is no longer dirt cheap!). As such, there are many paradisaical beaches here that are conspicuously empty, granting an opportunity for you to get the relaxation you crave without the distractions that you fear.

Before we divulge these slices of paradise to you, a bit of a PSA beforehand: you’ll be flying a long way to get to Southeast Asia, so make sure to book a low cost flight in advance so you won’t be paying a king’s ransom to flee the penetrating cold at home.

With that tip out of the way, let’s delve into some of the beach destinations in Malaysia that await your arrival…

Monkey Beach, Penang, Malaysia

While Penang doesn’t seem like the place where you would find a secluded beach given the sight of the crowded city of Georgetown on its eastern shore, it’s northwestern corner couldn’t be more idyllic. Protected by Penang National Park, Monkey Beach boasts waters that are much clearer than the resort beaches at Batu Ferringghi further to the east, and the only powerboats you’ll see here are the ones bringing guests in.

Mira Beach, Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands have the same tantalizing water that Thai isles to the north have, minus the crowds. Just the same, it can get busy in high season at Long Beach where most people stay, so taking a water taxi to the much quieter Mira Beach is highly recommended. Its romantic vistas, warm water, and total lack of people will have you head over heels in love with this place upon arrival!

Juara Beach, Tioman Island

If you can’t do without cheap alcohol, but don’t want to be surrounded by man-children getting blackout drunk, heading to Juara Beach on Tioman Island is just the place for you (especially if you love diving). Being a duty free island, the alcohol here is tax-free in the main settlement of Kampung Tekek, so stock up before heading to the eastern side of the island to Juara, where golden sands, a warm lagoon, and excellent surfing waves in the low season await you.
